About Volume Measurement
Volume measures the amount of three-dimensional space occupied by a substance. Different measurement systems use different units, and even within systems there can be variations (US vs UK gallons, for example).
Metric System
The metric system uses liters as the standard unit of volume. It's a decimal system where conversions are based on powers of 10, making calculations straightforward.
US Customary System
The US system uses various units including gallons, quarts, pints, cups, and fluid ounces. These units have different conversion factors and are not based on powers of 10.
UK vs US Volume
Note that UK and US fluid measurements differ. A US gallon (3.785 liters) is smaller than a UK gallon (4.546 liters). This converter uses US measurements unless specified otherwise.
